A quick break from recaps to let you all know that we did have a small earthquake last night, but it didn´t do any major damage. It happened around 9:40 pm last night, and we were already in bed. At first it was just a really loud noise--I thought it might be thunder, or a big truck or something--but then the shaking started so we could feel it. Once we figured out what it was we scooted over to the bedroom doorway. Once it stopped we went downstairs with our flashlights and went outside. Everything seemed okay and JP checked the house for cracks etc., but we didn´t see any damage. There were one or two small aftershocks after we were back inside, but I heard them more than felt them.
When the earthquake happened all the lights went out--according to JP they have them on a sensor so they turn off to avoid fires, which is smart, but it was very dark! Especially because the lights in the park next to our apartment are usually on all night, which means it is never very dark in the house. So we went back to bed and woke up to find the electricity back on, and that schools were closed for the day to allow inspections of the buildings, another smart idea. JP looked online and found out that the epicenter was about 20 miles west of here (toward the coast) and that it was a 6.2, but it didn´t seem that strong. Of course, this was my first official earthquake so I don´t have a lot to compare it to. Just in case anyone is searching out news from Peru, we wanted to let you know that all is well, even if it was an extra exciting evening.
