Fun with 3 Year Olds

Now that we have caught up on our trip to Arequipa and our hike, it is time to recap some of the highlights of the last few weeks here in Tacna. We are doing well overall and keeping busy with our various projects.

I work closely with Nadia, the school psychologist, and as October is the month where the primary and preschool classes studied the Rights of a Child, she was doing a workshop with each class about these rights, focused on the theme of discrimination and differences.  I brought my camera along to the workshop in the 3-year-old room o f the preschool, and here are the results.

Here is Nadia introducing the lesson to the kids--I love the way their room is decorated!  Because the kids are only 3, the concept of discrimination was simplified quite a bit to focus more on being friends with everyone even if they are different from you.  They watched a video, then did an activity with hand motions:

We also danced, and they listened to a story that Nadia acted out with cut out animals:

The kids were really pretty attentive.  Then they played another hand game:

Finally, they had a picture to color that illustrated the friends that were made in the first video, even though all the friends were different. The kids colored very well,

probably motivated by the fact that they were promised a candy for their reward after they finished the drwaing. Nadia and I checked the pictures to make sure they finished, and then gave them the candy. However, they had to wait to drink their milk before they could eat the candy.  They got their milk just a few minutes later, but this was definitely harder for some of the kids than others--quite a few would take it out of their pockets and look at it, and then needed to be reminded to wait.  Overall the kids were good, the lesson was well planned, and hopefully they learned something useful!
