Trip to Vermont

Last Saturday Cathleen and I set off for my interview at the University of Vermont in Burlington.  We decided to make a little vacation out of it (you know, to get away from our busy life in Columbus) and see some friends and family.

From Columbus we headed to New Jersey to visit with a friend of mine in grad school at Princeton.  I got my first taste of West Virginia (though just in the car).

After the long trek through PA we arrived to the quaint village of Princeton and got a tour of the campus from my friend Mark.  We then watched the AZ Cardinals get whooped before heading north to Clark, NJ and Katie's grandma's house.

We went to Mass Sunday morning and out to dinner at Charlie Brown's (I thought he was just a bald, dumb cartoon character but apparently he also owns a steakhouse in New Jersey).

We headed north on Monday morning for a five-state, five-hour trip that ended at Katie's friend Jenny's place in New Hampshire.  I don't know of many five-hour trips in the West that will get you to more than two states but back East is another story.

I missed the Connecticut sign ... oops!

And the official Vermont sign but did catch this ...

Jenny had just finished her Step 2 medical boards test (an 8 hour affair taken during the 4th and final year of med school that, along with the degree makes you a real MD) and had lots of good advice and observations for me as I hopefully start down that challenging path soon.

Tuesday, we set off in the dark early (but not as early as I would have liked) morning on a supposed 1.5 hour trip to Burlington, Vermont.  Unfortunately, it was snowing with low visibility and for most of the trip only one lane of the interstate was plowed so we weren't traveling at the speeds that make it a 1.5 hour trip.  Luckily, Katie is a Superwoman behind the wheel (especially when wearing her leotard) and got us there quick enough that I wasn't late for my interview day -- though I was the last of 18 interviewees to arrive.  It just shows that I am not enough of a dorky pre-med.

Here's one of the views that Vermont was hiding Tuesday morning:

I had to get all dressed up in my monkey suit that works great with a chullo:

We were lucky enough to be able to stay with a friend and colleague of Katie's dad who used to work at UVM.  That evening we took a short tour of downtown Burlington, which was a beautiful town despite the lackluster weather that blocked any views of Lake Champlain on whose shore it sits.

On Tuesday we started our way back towards Ohio.  We drove to Buffalo, NY where we stayed with my great aunt Phyllis.  She prepared us an authentic Italian dinner which hit the spot after driving all day.

On Wednesday we finished our trip passing again through Pennsylvania before returning to Ohio.
