Hi all!
Just a quick check in from Tumbes to let you know we made it safe and sound and without much incident to Guayaquil and then onward to Tumbes, where we are now. Our flight to Guayaquil was a little late leaving, and we were a little concerned when the pilot got on the loudspeaker to let us know they were checking on the status of a volcano near Quito (farther north in Ecuador) to ensure that its venting would not affect our flight. They said it would not, and they were right. We had a pretty relaxed flight, but didn´t arrive until almost midnight and by the time we waited in line at immigration, got our bags, and got through customs it was nearly one a.m.
We made our way to our hostel and collapsed. It was hot and humid, and the fan in our room was helpful but not sufficient, so we opened the windows to help with the heat. By the time I woke up I had mosquito bites (I hope they are all mosquito bites) numbering well into the double digits, while JP didn´t have any. I tried not to itch too much as we ate our included breakfast and headed for the fancy bus terminal. We bought our tickets to Tumbes and settled in for about a six hour ride, through the lush, green countryside of Ecuador--we had to close the windows a few times for brief rainstorms--but the breeze the rest of the time helped with the mugginess considerably.
We found our hostel yesterday afternoon and checked out the small town here, and made plans for a tour of the mangrove swamps here. We had a great time on the tour today, and are relaxing and catching up on internet news this afternoon. We hope to get pictures up once we can upload them from the camera and make them easier to get to in an internet cafe, but we just wanted to send a quick update. Tomorrow we are off to Máncora, the surfing capital of northern Peru, so we will let you know how it goes!
