Pisco y la playa

We made it uneventfully through our overnight bus ride from Trujillo to Lima, arriving in Lima shortly after 7 am to cloudy skies again (I am pretty sure I have never seen the sun in Lima, and I have been there in August, December, and now March. Yuck!).  Our goal was to get on a bus to Pisco and spend as little time as possible in Lima, and we got tickets for a 7:40 am bus out.  The bus was not full when we got on, so we were able to move up to the front row, which gave us a great view--it´s like being on top of a double-decker bus, except on these buses there are only seats on the upper level.  Our bus stopped frequently en route to Pisco, but no one had assigned seats so we were able to keep our seats and enjoy the view as we traveled down the coast to Pisco.

When we arrived, we checked in to the same hostel where the Brophy trip has stayed when they came here, got lunch, and went to visit Percy and Magaly´s family, who have worked with the Brophy trip on their house in 2008 and on their grandmother´s house in 2009.  Both houses were destroyed by the 2007 earthquake and Pisco is still very much under construcion.  When we walked around, there is either no sidewalk or the sidewalk has huge holes in it as workers attempt to reconstruct water lines or some subterrean pipes.  We visited with Percy and Magaly and their children, and with the grandmother and the part of the family that lives with her.  We took some pictures of her finished house so we will post them once we get back to a place with wireless internet.

This morning we went to the beach with the family, went swimming, played volleyball and soccer, and dug holes with the little kids.  We had a blast!  We rushed back to the hostel to shower and be out by 12, then treated everyone to lunch.  This afternoon we are heading to Ica, about two hours south, and from there we will return to Tacna, hopefully on Friday.  We are enjoying our travels and hope to be able to share pictures with you next week!
