Milestones

Last Thursday we realized that Abigail was 1 year, 1 month, 1 week, and 1 day old.  I am pretty sure this isn't some huge milestone, but it was fun to realize and seemed like a good opportunity to provide a quick update on what Abigail has been up to.
Gross Motor:
Abigail continues to walk everywhere, quickly, and look like she has been doing it forever. She is really interested in climbing stairs at playgrounds or other places she can find them, and is doing a good job problem solving how to get herself up with the help of the railings. She can now do this pretty consistently with the help of the railing but not a grown-up hand.

Fine Motor:
Abigail loves to point at things, and is able to manipulate smaller things more adeptly. She is learning to put people in and out of her Little People toys from her birthday in order to activate the noise and is quite pleased with herself.  She is getting better at feeding herself with a spoon as far as keeping the spoon level so all the yogurt does not spill off before it gets to her mouth, for example.

They do art in her classroom now so she has started scribbling on the white board to imitate us, which has been very entertaining too,

Communication:
This has been the biggest explosion over the past month or so.  Abigail's receptive language is just amazing and she is saying more things every day.

She can say: mama, dada, dog, yeah, hot, ah-dah (all done), anana (banana) and parts of many more words, and can sign for more, all done, and milk
(pictured: signing abigail's version of more)

She can point on command to: her nose, her foot, her other foot, a picture of a dog, mom and dad.

She can click her tongue and high five when asked.

She can get things when asked, like a certain book, a key, or her shoes. She can go to her room when we say we are going to her room and go to the bathroom when we say it is bathtime.

We say things like, "Abigail might like to hold the spoon while you feed her" and she immediately grabs the spoon and begins to help feed herself with a smile.  A few weeks ago, I said, "Abigail, want to go read a book?" and she looked at me, said "yeah" and went to the living room and picked one out. It is so much fun!

Problem Solving:
Abigail loves putting things into and out of boxes and containers and it is great to watch her little mind work as she figures out what can fit where and how to manipulate things.  She is beginning to stack blocks with me, which I also really enjoy.

Social and Emotional:
Abigail is a friendly, social, curious kid. She is becoming more comfortable approaching others, like dogs at the park or other kids at the playground, and seems to enjoy the responses she gets. We were out at dinner the other night and she had fun waving and making faces at the table next to us who worked hard to get a smile out of her. Once she decided they made the cut, however, they were rewarded with a bunch of smiles. When they left and other diners sat down, Abigail looked over and waved at them and seemed genuinely confused that they didn't notice (they were not actually looking in her direction).  It is fun to watch her go out and interact with others in the world, even though she still looks to us when she needs us.
